Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)

The Extended Medicare Safety Net is a government scheme that may entitle you to higher Medicare rebates once your out of pocket medical expenses reach the annual threshold set by Medicare. The current threshold is $2,544.30. Once reached, 80% of your subsequent out of pocket, out of hospital medical costs are refunded by Medicare for the remainder of that calendar year.

For more information, visit the Extended Medicare Safety Net and Medicare Safety Nets pages on Services Australia.

If you do not have private health insurance with obstetric cover, the delivery fee that would ordinarily be covered by your health fund becomes payable by you. This fee is $2,500 and is taken as a deposit at 34 weeks. Following delivery, we will lodge the claim with Medicare on your behalf and you will receive the applicable rebate paid directly to you. Please note that Frances Perry House will also invoice uninsured patients separately for their hospital stay and any theatre costs, see below (Additional Costs) for more information.

What the management fee covers

When you choose private care with Dr Peter, you’re not just booking appointments, you’re securing continuity. From your first antenatal visit through to six weeks after your baby arrives, Dr Peter is your single point of contact for everything. Dr Peter’s management fee includes the following:

  • Availability by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout your entire pregnancy and for six weeks after birth
  • In-room ultrasounds
  • All consultations with Dr Peter if you are admitted to or attend a hospital at any time during your pregnancy
  • All administrative requirements associated with your care, including letters, referrals and certificates
  • Attendance at, and management of your birth, regardless of the mode of delivery
  • Dr Peter continues to oversee your care while you’re in the hospital following your birth

All subsequent pregnancies receive priority booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Dr Peter does not charge a gap payment for labour and delivery, this is billed directly to your health fund.

We'd recommend checking three things before your first appointment: that your policy includes obstetric cover, whether a waiting period applies (most policies have a 12-month waiting period for maternity cover) and whether there are any out of pocket costs for your hospital stay at Frances Perry House.

Most pregnancies involve around 10 to 12 consultations with Dr Peter over the course of your pregnancy. If you need to be seen more frequently at any point, this is arranged on an as-needed basis at no additional cost.

Additional fees apply for antenatal consultations and you won't be eligible for the Medicare rebate on your management fee. Please contact our team and we can walk you through what to expect based on your specific circumstances.

You can still receive private care with Dr Peter. A delivery fee deposit of $2,500 is taken at 34 weeks and the applicable Medicare rebate is paid back to you directly after your birth. Frances Perry House will invoice separately for your hospital stay.

Yes, other providers involved in your care, such as your anaesthetist, paediatrician and pathology services, will invoice separately. You'll find a guide to these additional costs on this page.

No. Dr Peter's fee remains the same regardless of the complexity of your pregnancy or birth. Whether you have a straightforward vaginal birth or require a caesarean section, your fee will not change.
