What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a modern and reversible form of contraception offering women a long-lasting and effective alternative to the contraceptive pill. Dr Peter specialises in prescribing many contraception options, including IUDs, and takes a personalised approach in discovering the ideal contraceptive solution that suits your unique circumstances and preferences. An IUD is shaped like a small “T” and is made of a combination of copper and plastic. It is inserted into the uterus by a medical professional and is able to reduce the likelihood of pregnancy significantly. The IUD is removed when it is nearing expiry or when desired by you. The IUD insertion, removal and replacement process is simple and timely, with the procedures able to be completed in the same day by Dr Peter.

Different types of IUD’s

There are two different types of IUD. One is hormone releasing, and the other is purely copper, which does not release hormones. Dr Peter will be able to accurately determine which is the best fit for you based on your lifestyle, medical history, and personal preference. The two different types are as follows:

Progestogen IUD (hormone releasing)

A hormone-releasing IUD, also known as a progesterone IUD (Mirena or Kyleena), is a specialised IUD with a small component that releases progestin (or levonorgestrel), a synthetic hormone similar to the naturally produced hormone progesterone. When this hormone is released, the cervical mucus that usually assists the sperm in meeting the egg is thickened, creating a barrier that instead, stops the sperm from reaching the egg. Additionally, it thins the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of sperm attaching, reducing the possibility of pregnancy. The hormone-releasing IUD is a highly effective and reliable form of contraception, providing women with between 3-6 years of pregnancy prevention depending on the brand selected.

Copper IUD (non-hormone releasing)

The copper IUD is the most widely used reversible contraception in the world. Unlike the hormonal IUD, the copper IUD does not release any hormones into the body and has a copper filling instead of a hormone producing component. Instead, it works as the copper creates a detrimental environment for sperm, which immobilises or damages them, making it very difficult for the egg to be successfully fertilised. The copper option also has the ability to thin out the uterine lining, preventing the implantation of a fertilised egg. This IUD can last from 5 – 10 years.

IUD Side Effects: What you need to know

As with any contraceptive or medication, the IUD can produce side effects for some people, and Dr Peter will discuss all potential risks and side effects in detail during your consultation. While the majority of women experience minimal side effects with an IUD, a small percentage may notice some changes. These can include:

  • Weight gain
  • Acne/skin problems
  • Mood changes
  • Cramps
  •  Heavier or lighter periods
  • Change in period frequency

These side effects are primarily short-term and do not have a major impact on day-to-day functioning.

The hormonal IUD can be generally associated with lighter, less intense periods, however, can be consistent with mood changes or weight gain, whereas the copper IUD can be associated with slightly heavier periods, but have no hormonal effects such as mood changes.

This is testament to the fact that side effects are dependent on specific circumstances and genetics, hence why it is highly recommended to discuss your options in consultation with Dr Peter.

Although an IUD boasts an impressive 99% effectiveness rate, it’s crucial to acknowledge that there exists a small 1% chance of pregnancy. While the likelihood is relatively low, it’s important to know the potential possibility.

During the insertion of an IUD, it is possible to encounter slight discomfort but rest assured that the procedure is swift. It is common for certain individuals to experience post-procedure cramping and temporary discomfort, which may persist for a few days.

Using an intrauterine device (IUD) does not typically result in weight gain as a common or direct side effect. Although a few individuals may mention experiencing weight changes while using an IUD, extensive clinical studies have not established a connection between IUD usage and weight gain.

Most women can use an IUD, including those who haven't had children. However, a consultation is needed to ensure it’s the right contraceptive method based on medical history and needs.

Yes, both hormonal and copper IUDs are safe to use while breastfeeding and are often recommended for postpartum contraception.
